*Registration forms must be turned in before the class date! Forms will not be accepted at the door.

The McCoy Natatorium is a fully-equipped first aid and CPR/AED training center. Our instructional staff, including experienced EMTs, are able to meet your CPR and First Aid training needs, both at the lay rescuer and professional rescuer levels. Our first aid and CPR/AED programs will help give you the confidence needed to respond in an emergency situation with skills that can save a life. Most accidents occur at work or at home, so be prepared to take action -- you may very well save a life!

We offer a variety of course dates and times to best meet your training needs. Our experienced American Red Cross instructors will help prepare you to adequately respond in times of crisis.  Certification is available to those who successfully pass the written exam (80%) and the practical skills evaluations.

All of our courses meet the current ECC 2010 guidelines. In fact, Shawn DeRosa, Penn State's Director of Aquatics and Safety Officer for Intercollegiate Athletics worked closely with the American National Red Cross to update the 2011 CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider program, in addition to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program.  Certification in all programs is valid for two years.

Red Cross Lay Responder First Aid and CPR / AED Courses

First Aid and CPR / AED courses are designed to teach lay and professional rescuers the basic life support skills needed to render emergency care when needed. The knowledge of what to do in an emergency, and perhaps even more importantly, what not to do could make the difference between life and death or permanent disability.

Participants in all courses must be able to demonstrate skills on each other (e.g. bandaging, or rolling an injured person into a recovery position) or on CPR training manikins.  Given this, participants are encouraged to dress comfortably as skills are practiced on the floor.

If you are taking a Red Cross First Aid or CPR/AED course, please download the free textbook that accompanies your course. This text is an excellent resource both before and after your course.

We strongly recommend that class participants review the applicable chapters in the text prior to the first class session.

For CPR/AED classes, please read Chapters 1 - 4.

For First Aid classes, please read Chapter 1 and Chapters 5 - 11.

Important Policies

Materials:  Course fees include access to electronic textbooks / PDFs in addition to printed skill cards.  For the full CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers course, your course fee includes a CPR pocket mask. To keep the cost of review courses to a minimum, the course fee does not include a CPR pocket mask.  These are available for purchase ($10) should you need a replacement mask.

Attire:  Course participants will be expected to kneel and roll on the ground. As such, we recommend that you dress appropriately.

Class Size:  Class size is limited to 10-12 participants. Registrations are first-come, first-served. Registrations will only be accepted with full payment.  IDCC is accepted, provided budget information is provided.  Please make checks payable to: The Pennsylvania State University.  Credit cards are not accepted. As a minimum of six (6) people are needed to run a course we recommend that you allow yourself ample time to achieve certification in the event that your class in cancelled due to lack of registration (see "Course Cancellation Policy" below). Please help us spread the word about these training opportunities.

Course Cancellation Policy: The University may cancel or postpone any course or activity because of insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. If a course is cancelled, you will be offered the option in transferring your enrollment to a different date or a full refund.

Refund Policy:  If you choose to cancel your registration for a course, refunds will only issue if written notice is received at least two (2) weeks prior to the start date. Refunds will not be provided for cancellations made within two weeks of the start date. Please contact Meredith Stille if you wish to cancel your registration. Refunds are not provided to individuals who do not meet the minimum American Red Cross course completion requirements, including skill assessments and written exams. Refunds will not be issued to students who fail to show up on the date of the course for which they are registered. Participants in lifeguarding programs who fail to meet the course pre-requisites will be eligible for a partial refund, in accordance with the terms on the registration form.

Inclement Weather Policy: The University may cancel classes because of inclement weather. If the University is closed, there will be no evening classes. Those enrolled will be offered a choice of an alternative date to complete the course or a full refund.

Reasonable Accommodations:  All Health & Safety programs include a written exam to help assess your understanding of course content.  If you need special testing accommodations (e.g. large print exam), please let us know in advance of the course.  Exams are only available in English. Requested accommodations that fundamentally alter the nature of the skills will not be granted. For example, participants must be able to kneel on the ground to perform chest compressions at an appropriate rate and depth.  Persons with back conditions that cannot perform skills on the ground are welcomed to audit the course and participate in the program to the full extent they are able, but will not be eligible for certification. The full course fee applies to students who may audit the course. Please note: The classes at the McCoy Natatorium are not accessible to persons using wheelchairs. We are happy to reschedule the class upon request to a facility that is accessible.

Because skills and knowledge deteriorate with time, the American Red Cross makes available FREE refresher reminders to help you remember the steps needed to save a life. While no substitute for recertification, refreshers are an excellent means of helping keep first aid and CPR/AED skills fresh in your memory. We encourage all particapants to visit the refresher page quarterly (every 3 months) at http://www.redcrossrefresher.com/

Simply text "GETFIRST" to 90999 or search "American Red Cross" in iTunes or Google Play App Stores.

The First Aid App is an excellent (and FREE) resource you can use whenever you find yourself in a position to provide emergency care.  The app comes with video clips you can download or stream online to help futher illustrate first aid procedures.
