Everyone Should Learn To Swim

Penn State University is happy to offer swimming lessons to people of all ages. Swimming is an important life skill. A recent study shows that children who learn to swim at a young age reach many developmental milestones earlier than the norm. (See Science Daily, Nov. 16, 2012).

All of our swimming instructors are certified as American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors, meaning they are well-trained in teaching swimming and water safety programs following a structured program based upon developmental abilities and individual progress. Our swimming lessons focus not only on basic swimming skills but also water safety education designed to teach participants how to safely recreate in, on and around the water.

Discounted rates are available for program faculty/staff/students who are "members" of the Natatorium ~ those persons who hold a semester pass or annual individual membership. Students with a valid Penn State Fitness Pass are eligible for "member" rates. To qualify for a discounted rate for your child, you must hold a Family Membership, which is available for purchase at the Customer Service Desk at the McCoy Natatorium.

During lessons, parents are encouraged to remain in the seating area at the pool.  This way should there be a need to speak with a parent, you will be easy to find.  In case of emergency, if a parent/guardian is not in the pool area, we will call the emergency number listed on your course registration.  In case of emergency, should you need to contact your child during a swim lesson, please feel free to come onto the pool deck.  Otherwise we encourage parents not to interrupt lessons that are in progress.

Private Lessons (Adult or Youth)

We are not able to schedule new clients for private swim lessons due to lack of instructor availability over the summer.

Existing clients should continue to work with your instructor to schedule lessons.  New clients wishing to enroll in private lessons should complete and return the Self-Assessment Form listing your goals, abilities, and scheduling availability with the registration form listed above. We will be happy to set you up with an instructor to schedule your lessons come fall semester.

We offer individual, semi-private, and small group lessons with our qualified swimming instructors. Lesson times are flexible so as to accommodate your and your family's busy schedules. To get started, please complete and return the Self-Assessment form to our offices. (You may also complete this form for your child). We will then contact you to discuss in more detail your goals and try to coordinate an instructor you can work with.

With a limited number of instructors and high private lesson demand, there may be a delay in scheduling an instructor for your lesson(s).  We apologize for this inconvenience.

Please note: private swim lessons are valid only during the fiscal year in which they were purchased (July 1 - June 30). Please plan your purchases accordingly.

INSTRUCTORS:

University and Campus Recreation policy dictates only University instructors (Campus Recreation Employees) may teach courses / private lessons at our facilities. Private and group lessons other than those conducted by Natatorium staff are in violation of University policies and are not allowed.
